EITI, The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, is an independent international voluntary initiative
creating transparency in the oil, gas and mining industries. EITI aims to improve the accountability of governments that get
revenues from oil, gas and mining as a step towards managing and applying those revenues in such a way that they contribute
to sustainable development, economic growth and poverty reduction.
EITI requires transparency in the payments made by companies and revenues received by governments in order to help
empower civil society to hold governments accountable for the management of extractive industry revenues. In 2006, the Third
International EITI Conference in Oslo approved a validation process. The goal of validation is to make sure that countries and
companies do what they say they will do, and that country implementation programmes comply fully with the EITI Criteria.
Since EITI was launched in 2002, civil society, governments, companies and investors have all played an active role in defining EITI.
More than 40 countries have pledged to implement EITI. Links to the latest reports and profiles for committed countries are
